5 Fantastic Aftercare Tips For Your Hair Extensions

Real human hair extensions are perfect for adding volume, length, or simply switching up your style this season. Hair extensions are an investment, and a beautiful one! Showpony’s range delivers glam and versatility to suit any occasion.

Like any investment, your real hair extensions need some TLC and attention too. If you neglect a good hair care routine for your hair extensions, it can result in dull strands, breakage, or worse, damage your natural hair.

Well, nobody wants that 🙅‍♀️ Even though it isn’t your real hair, you still need to treat it as if it were. And the best way to get the most out of your fabulous new hair? Making sure that it lasts as long as possible by keeping it looking salon-fresh and healthy.

The secret to keeping your real hair extensions looking beautiful is a good aftercare routine. Incorporating good habits from the get-go results in longer-lasting extensions. Let us help you keep those stunning real hair extensions looking as if they were bought yesterday; follow these tips carefully!

1. Use good quality hair care products

When washing your real hair extensions, it's best to wash them thoroughly. Remember that hair extensions don't get the nutrients and natural oil your real hair gets.
We recommend that you avoid buying alcohol-based and sulphate-based products. These nasties can cause a lot of damage to your hair extensions, from tangles, dryness, weakened adhesive and split ends. We recommend always using Showpony Shampoo and Conditioner, as it’s specially formulated to be used with all types of Showpony hair extensions.

2. Protect from heat

Whether it's the scorching summer sun or your go-to curling iron, it’s important to protect your real hair extensions using a heat protectant. Applying high heat can cause significant damage to your hair extensions, such as excessive shedding and breakage.

Before using any heat styling tools, make sure you apply a heat protectant spray and ensure the heat setting does not exceed 180C. If you're wondering, why this low? While our natural hair can withstand some high heat, it is also continually being rejuvenated from the scalp, whereas hair extensions do not get the same nourishments and oil to keep it silky and shiny.

3. Prevent from tangling

Hair knots and tangles can be caused by several things, starting with sweat and the weather. Your sweat is acidic and salty, making your extension dry, while humidity can make your hair prone to frizz and tangles. Thankfully, there are simple ways to avoid this.

The easiest way is to brush your hair using soft-bristle brushes and wide-tooth combs. We recommend using a good quality Paddle Brush. Next is to use hair care products that are specifically made for damaged and dry hair. Try to avoid products that contain oils such as argan oil, as this can cause slippage to your hair extensions.

Going to the beach or dipping into your pool can also cause your hair to get messy and tangled. One way to prevent from leaving the beach with frizzy hair is to braid it. That's right, sis! An updo or French braid will not just keep you from having messy hair but also will give you that cute beach vibe!

4. Coloured by a pro

Remember, good hair speaks louder than words. So, unless you're a trained professional, we suggest staying off YouTube and taking your fabulous hair to your hairstylist.

We don’t recommend bleaching or dying your real hair extensions as they've already been through a colouring process during manufacture. Coloured hair forced with bleach can take a longer soaking time and could lead to damaged hair.

5. Stick to lightweight styling products

Try to avoid using sticky styling products with a thick consistency like hair spray, gel, or wax on your real hair extensions. The more heavy products you use, the more you'll have to thoroughly wash your hair and your hair extensions. In addition, over-washing can result in dry, frizzy and tangled hair.

Keep your hair looking shiny and bouncy by sticking to lightweight styling products. Also, bear in mind that the products you use on your natural hair can transfer to your extensions due to head movement and scalp heat.

There's nothing more satisfying than stepping back and admiring how amazing your new investment in hair looks on you. Even better, care for them properly and they’ll last months! The secret to thicker, natural-looking and healthy real hair extensions lies in your hands, so follow these tips now!
