Sunscreen and Hair Extensions: What You Need to Know
Why?
The reasoning behind the unwanted pink or orange staining on your extensions lies in the hands of the sunscreen you choose. Yes, that’s right – some sunscreens and tanning products stain your hair! We took the time to do some digging, and research has shown that the active ingredient, Avobenzone, is responsible for staining your extensions. The discolouration is caused by the keratin in your human hair extensions and the avobenzone having a chemical reaction with each other when exposed to UV rays.
Chemical Vs Mineral
When it comes to sunscreens, there are two main types that you will find – chemical and mineral. So, what’s the difference?
Well, they both protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, but they do so in different ways. Chemical sunscreens use active (UV protecting) ingredients such as avobenzone, where as mineral sunscreens use active ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
What Does This Mean?
The solution is simple - avoid chemical-based sunscreens! Research shows that most chemical based sunscreens contain the extension-staining ingredient avobenzone, so it’s best to avoid them all together. To keep your skin and your extensions safe, opt for mineral based sunscreens instead, as these will have a lower chance to not stain your hair or extensions.
